Outreach opportunities
The Brandermill Church is involved in a variety of dynamic ministries in the Chesterfield County/Greater Richmond area. Area residents benefit from programs which include:
33rd Street Feeding Program
The Brandermill Church prepares lunch—fried chicken, green beans and potatoes—for the homeless on the first Tuesday of every month at The Greater Mount Moriah Baptist Church on North 1st Street. Donations of disposable flatware, paper goods, etc. are welcomed. Contact Doug Bollinger at 744-2737.
Blanket Drive
Brandermill Church has participated in the Church World Service Blanket Drive for eight years. Blankets are shipped all over the world to provide warmth and security to the poor and the homeless. The success of this outreach project has been largely due to the enthusiastic participation of the children of the Brandermill Church. Contact Helmut Thielsch at 897-3847.
CARITAS- Congregations Around Richmond Involved To Assure Shelter
CARITAS is a network of congregations that provide shelter and hospitality to persons who are homeless in the Richmond area. The Brandermill Church has served as a host for the past six years, with more congregational support than for any other outreach project. For volunteer opportunities, please contact Randy and Kelly Riggs at 739-8498. For more information about CARITAS, visit their website.
CCHASM - Chesterfield/Colonial Heights Alliance for Social Ministry
CCHASM is an alliance of faith-based communities within Chesterfield County and Colonial Heights originally founded in 1988 to care for the emergency needs of residents. Today, CCHASM not only provides emergency relief to clients, but also helps people become self-reliant. For more information, visit their website.
Christmas Mother
The Brandermill Church provides gifts each Christmas for about six families in need. Each family member receives a complete outfit and the children receive toys, books and educational games as well as two requested special gifts. Household items are also provided, along with a gift certificate from Ukrop’s for a Christmas dinner. Volunteer to purchase a gift or fill Christmas stockings for the children.
CROP Walk
The funds raised by the three-mile CROP Walk in October are used for hunger-fighting efforts in 80 countries. One-quarter of the proceeds remains in Richmond and benefits Freedom House, Pennies from Heaven and Richmond Friends of the Homeless. Visit the CROP Walk website. - www.churchworldservice.org
Freedom House
Freedom House is a nonprofit organization that helps homeless men and women recover from substance abuse, provides housing during the initial recovery and assists individuals in getting jobs and becoming independent. Six times a year we prepare a meal at the church and take it to Freedom House, where we serve the residents and dine with them. The church also donates household items and furnishings. Contact Bob Beatty at 839-0408.
Guatemala Mission Trip
The Guatemala mission effort is a cooperative construction project with the Mayan Indians in the highlands of Guatemala. This effort began in 1996 and has continued every year since, with a team of approximately ten people spending eleven days on the mission. We have built homes and vented cook stoves to replace unvented pit fires. The stove project resolves a chronic problem of respiratory and eye infections and conserves firewood. Although this is a construction effort, no construction experience is necessary. This is a unique spiritual opportunity to experience and do the work that Christ commanded us to do. Contact Kit Carson at 434-645-9700.
Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity is an international organization that builds houses for low-income families to buy at an affordable price. Each owner must invest 300 hours of volunteer time with Habitat and make regular mortgage payments on their new home. The Brandermill Church has helped build several Habitat homes in the Richmond area. Our involvement is both financial and physical. For more information about working with Habitat, check out their website. - www.richmondhabitat.org
Haiti Mission Trip
Church members travel to Port-au-Prince annually to provide health care to the city’s poorest residents. Needed volunteers include nurses, dental hygienists, medical technicians, pharmacists and health educators. Volunteers without medical training are also needed to assist in the pharmacy, fit eyeglasses and provide simple fluoride treatments. We traditionally send a team in March or April. However, due to the continued political unrest there, we have not sent a team for two years. Check back for updates.
Honduras Mission Trip
Part of an ongoing effort of the Friends of Barnabas, this mission seeks to identify and treat malnourished children suffering from parasites and vitamin deficiencies, as well as provide basic health care. Health care providers are particularly valuable to the team’s mission. A recent team that included several Brandermill Church volunteers were able to see almost 3,600 individuals in 5 days. Trips are ongoing. Contact Joe Covolo at 744-4682.
Richmond Friends of the Homeless
In its 17th year, this program aims to enrich the lives of Richmond’s homeless. This includes providing a hot lunch Monday through Friday in two of Richmond’s most impoverished areas and providing clothing, blankets and other items.
Five-Cents-a-Meal
This ongoing project collects donations on the first Sunday of each month to help feed the needy in the Richmond area. Five-Cents-a-Meal envelopes are included in the bulletin on the first Sunday of each month.
Walk-In Ministry
Six Mondays each year (the first Monday of odd-numbered months) Brandermill Church assists with the preparation and serving of 120 to 180 lunches to Richmond’s needy at The 2nd Presbyterian Church. While most of the food comes from the Food Bank, The Brandermill Church provides bread, milk and desserts. A total of six volunteers are needed for each lunch. Contact
